Founded
in 1933, the national orchestra of the Duchy of Luxembourg has performed in
Europe’s finest concert halls, including the Vienna Musikverein, the Amsterdam
Concertgebouw, and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow.
It’s many recordings have won all the major prizes: Grand Prix de
l'Académie Charles Cros, Gramophone Award, Prix Cécilia, Deutscher

Since
its founding in 1933, the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg (formerly RTL
Symphony) has played a vital role in the musical life of the Grand Duchy.
Originally a privately run radio orchestra, the entire organization of eighty
musicians, administration, and technical staff was taken over by the state in
1996 within the framework of the newly formed Henri Pensis Foundation.
The
international reputation of the orchestra was consolidated through numerous
concerts, recordings, and radio and television productions during the tenures of
its three long-time principal conductors: Henri Pensis, Louis de Froment, and
Leopold Hager. From 1997 to 2000
David Shallon was musical director of the OPL.
Since then, the orchestra has experienced a new impetus: expansion from
eighty to ninety-three musicians, new emphases in programming - along with the
classic-romantic literature, the great moderns as well as contemporary composers
are particularly stressed in an already extensive repertoire. From September
2002 the British conductor Bramwell Tovey is Chief Conductor and Musical
Director of the O.P.L. Also starting in September 2002, Emmanuel Krivine will
return regularly to the orchestra as their preferred guest conductor.

OPL appears regularly abroad in regional exchange concerts (Saarbrücken, Metz,

Cathédrales" in the Picardie (France), "Ars Musica" in Brussels,
"Saarland-Festspiele" and "Antiken-Festspiele"
inTrier. It has appeared in concert
in the Cologne Philharmonie, the Düsseldorf Konzerthalle, the Frankfurt Alte
Oper, the Stuttgart Liederhalle, the Munich Gasteig, the Berlin Schlosstheater,
the Grosses Festspielhaus in Salzburg, the Brucknerhaus in Linz, the Vienna
Musikverein, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow
as well as in Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Bordeaux, Lisbon (on the occasion
of the world exhibition) and Wroclaw. Extensive
tours have taken the orchestra through Germany and Austria to Switzerland,
France, Italy, the Netherlands, and Great Britain.
The
OPL releases two or three CDs per season, mostly in collaboration with the
French record label Timpani (www.timpani-records.com).
World première recordings and new discoveries have attracted attention,
and not only that of specialists. Recordings
of the complete orchestral works of Cras and Ohana have already been completed
or, as Xenakis, are underway ; first-ever recordings of Bloch, Lili Boulanger,
Honegger,
Magnard,
Martinu, Pierné, Poulenc, Ropartz (his opera "Le Pays") or Roussel
have been distinguished
with numerous international prizes (Grand Prix de l'Académie Charles Cros,
Gramophone Award, Prix Cécilia, Deutscher Schallplattenpreis). In January 2002
the orchestra received 2 „Cannes Classical Awards" of the MIDEM for its
CD with works by the french composer Gabriel Pierné (1863 - 1937): „Record of
the Year" and „Best Recording Orchestral Music 20th Century".
The
Louvigny Quartet (soloists of the O.P.L.) have recently recorded the Piano
Quintet and String Quartet by Jean Cras, in September they will record the Piano
Quintet by Gabriel Dupont (another première).
During
the season 2002/2003 the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg will make a big
tour through Austria, Croatia, northern Italy and Germany. The orchestra will
give concerts in Prague (National Theatre), Athens (Megaron), Utrecht, Enschede,
Aachen, Brussels (Palais des Beaux-Arts), Liège, Völklingen (Saarland
Festspiele) and Strasburg. In October/November 2003 the orchestra will make its
first extensive tour in Asia (China and Korea).

Tovey, the outstanding British conductor, is working with an increasingly prestigious list of orchestras, including the New York
Philharmonic, Toronto Symphony, Montreal Symphony, and the City of Birmingham
Symphony Orchestra.
He
was appointed Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony in September 2000, and
enjoyed great success in his first season with this orchestra in a broad range
of programming from the opening night of Mahler Symphony No. 1 to the choral
masterpiece by Benjamin Britten, the War Requiem.
Also in this season, Mr Tovey made his debut with the New York
Philharmonic and has worked with the London Philharmonic, the Toronto Symphony
and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
Bramwell
Tovey conducts a huge range of works across the whole of the musical spectrum.
His strong commitment to new music was demonstrated during his time as a
Music Director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in Canada where he founded a
New Music Festival and was its Artistic Director for 10 years.
During that time the Festival premiered more than 250 new works by a
broad range of international and Canadian composers.
Practically all of these concerts were broadcast on the CBC in Canada.
Tovey also has a strong affinity with choral works and has conducted
works from Mahler's Symphony No. 8 through to Bach's Mass in B Minor.
He also has premiered new choral works including the oratorio
Resurrection by Canadian Composer Victor Davies.
In the opera house he has conducted operas by Puccini, Strauss, Mozart,
Menotti, Poulenc, Britten and most recently Stravinsky, when he conducted The
Rake's Progress with the Edmonton Opera. Further
plans include the premiere of a new opera on a joint commission from the Banff
Centre and the Calgary Opera for 2003.
In
recent seasons, Bramwell Tovey has conducted orchestras across Canada including
the Toronto Symphony, the Calgary Symphony, the Montreal Symphony and the
National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa). In
the UK, he has performed with the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the
Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the City of Birmingham Orchestra.
In recent seasons he has also performed with orchestras including the
Belgian National Orchestra, the Israel Sinfonietta, the Leipzig Radio Orchestra
and the Ravinia Festival Orchestra, where he conducted a special concert with
Bryn Terfel in September 1999.
In
addition to conducting, Bramwell has a range of interests including
composition where most recently his new Cello Concerto was premiered at
the New Music Festival in Winnipeg in January 2001. He has also composed for brass band and enjoyed great success
with his Requiem premiered by the Hannaford Street Silver Band in Toronto in
2000. This work will be recorded in
Spring 2001. Mr Tovey is an
accomplished jazz pianist and has enjoyed performing and recording in that idiom
over the years.
Bramwell
Tovey has a well deserved reputation as an exceptional communicator. His debut on the renowned Young People's series of the New
York Philharmonic last season resulted in immediate re-invitation to conduct
more concerts on that series and additional concerts as part of the New York
Philharmonic's regular season.
Bramwell
Tovey's work for television includes two documentaries with the City of
Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and a special production of Sleeping Beauty for
British television. In Canada, CBC
TV recently broadcast a special Adrienne Clarkson presentation Revelation on the
world premiere of Victor Davies Oratorio, premiered by Tovey and the Winnipeg
Symphony.
Tovey
holds an honorary Associateship of the Royal Academy of Music and an honorary
Doctorate of Laws from the University of Winnipeg.
He was awarded the Canada 125th Anniversary Medal in recognition of his
contribution to Canadian cultural life. In
1999 Bramwell Tovey received an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University
of Manitoba and the Joan Chalmers Award for Artistic Direction, a prestigious
Canadian prize worth $25,000 awarded for an outstanding contribution in a
professional performing arts organization.
Bramwell
Tovey was appointed Chief Conductor and Music Director of the Orchestre
Philharmonique du Luxembourg, a post he took up in September 2002. He looks forward to bringing a broad range of repertoire, in
addition to leading the orchestra for recording projects and annual
international tours.

Evelyn
Glennie
Percussion
To
individually list all of Evelyn's awards and achievements is not only impossible
but a pointless exercise. For the first ten years of her career virtually every
performance Evelyn gave was in some way a first. The first time an orchestra had
performed with a percussion soloist, the first solo percussion performance at a
venue or festival or the world premiere of a new percussion concerto.
Evelyn
gives more than 100 performances a year all over the world to universal critical
acclaim from the toughest of reviewers in many of the world's most esteemed
publications. The fact that Evelyn has performed with virtually all of the
world's finest orchestras and greatest conductors in the most famous concert
halls only proves that Evelyn is one of the world's top international concert
soloists and the most in demand solo percussionist in the world. What takes
Evelyn a step beyond the ranks of the elite is that she combines her superb
technical abilities, a profound appreciation of the visual elements of
percussion along with her astonishing musicality to create performances of such
stunning vitality that they almost constitute a new type of performance. To this
end Evelyn has commissioned over one hundred new works for solo percussion from
many of the world's most talented composers. Despite all the advice to the
contrary, Evelyn is not only the first person to successfully create and sustain
a full-time career as a solo percussionist in the history of classical music but
is redefining the goals and expectations of percussion students, orchestras,
concert promoters and the general public the world over.
Evelyn's
recording career has been as illustrious as her performing career. Evelyn's
first CD, a recording of Bartok's "Sonata for two Pianos and
Percussion" won her a Grammy in 1988. Rather than an ambition achieved,
winning the most highly regarded recording prize in the world was only the first
step for Evelyn. Subsequent solo recordings have earned a further two Grammy
nominations, one of which won in 2002 (Bela Fleck collaboration for Sony
Classical), a Classic CD Award and great critical acclaim. Evelyn's twelfth solo
CD, Shadow Behind the Iron Sun (BMG Records) was based on a radical concept and
has once again questioned people's expectations. Despite working a relentless
schedule Evelyn is in constant demand to release new recordings, seventeen so
far, the most recent being 'Oriental Landscapes' (BIS) and 'Fractured Lines' by
Mark-Anthony Turnage (Chandos).
Outside
of actual performance Evelyn excels in everything to which she turns her hand.
From writing a bestselling autobiography, Good Vibrations, to hosting two series
of her own television programs for the BBC. Evelyn regularly appears on
television across the world, most recent appearances include The David Letterman
Show (USA), Sesame Street (USA), The Michael Barrymore Show (UK) and presenting
and performing on Songs of Praise (UK). Evelyn's Commonwealth Games Festival
Concert was broadcast on BBC4 and she is currently collaborating with the
renowned film director Thomas Riedelsheimer on a new film.
Evelyn
composes and records music for film and television. As in her performance
career, Evelyn has already made a significant impact. Evelyn's first foray into
the area of TV commercials resulted in such innovative music that it was
subsequently paraphrased by others. Her first high quality drama produced a
score so original she was nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television
Arts awards (BAFTA's); the UK equivalent of the Oscars.
Evelyn
Glennie has already achieved virtually every accolade or ambition of which any
aspiring musician could possibly dream. In 1993 at the age of 27, Evelyn was
awarded the OBE (Officer of the British Empire) for her services to music.
Throughout all of this Evelyn still retains the same level of drive and
determination and is currently studying for her Psychology and Law degrees
through the Open University. Talking with Evelyn, either privately or on air, is
a humbling experience. Seeing how unaffected she is by her amazing
accomplishments is enough to make you question your understanding of what is
possible. Evelyn herself though, feels she has barely scratched the surface. She
is still full of drive and enthusiasm and is brimming with ideas to improve the
experience for the audience and redefine the very format of live performance
itself.

Was Proclaimed, Sunday Evening, "Disc of The Year"
(selected
among the 22 titles selected in 19 categories) to the prize list of the 81
Cannes Classical Awards Prix international of the disc, made public within the
framework of the international Market of the disc and the musical edition (MIDEM)
of Cannes. Among the about sixty
productions presented (three named in each category) appeared this year two
CDs of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg (the first volume of work
for orchestra of Iannis Xenakis and CD "Cydalise and the Goat Foot" of
Gabriel Pierné recorded by late David Shallon which unfortunately never was
able to hear it).
This
disc also obtained the Prize in its category (concerting orchestral Music:
first impression on CD) and comes to enrich the prize list by the
distinctions already allotted by the international press and the Academy Charles
Cros. I "Cydalise and the Goat
Foot" by the Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg disc of the year In a
short speech, thanking the jury, Olivier Frank, director of the OPL, recalled
how much the disc result a true policy in this field counted in the current
expansion of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg.
This policy besides will be maintained and intensified during the year
2002 with the recording of the third volume of work for orchestra of Xenakis and
the second volume of lyric works of Guy Ropartz. The prize list Cannes classical awards is established by the
writers as a head and collaborators of specialized reviews of traditional discs

Ovation for the OPL
The
public in the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam greeted with enthusiasm the concert of
the Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg, last Thursday.
To two recoveries after the Concerto for violin and orchestra of Tchaïkovsky
and after the 4th Symphony of Johannes Brahms the public rose spontaneously to
lengthily applaud the musicians and their soloist, the Russian violonist Dimitri
Sitkovetsky, placed under the direction of Vassily Sinaisky.
The
great hall of Concertgebouw was filled to the last of her 2000 places.
In the assistance were the ambassador of Luxembourg in the Netherlands,
Jean Graf, the Foreign Minister of PaysBas, Jozias van.
Artsen, as well as many diplomats of the other European Convention
countries. Luxembourg was also
represented by the director of the ministry for the Culture, Guy Dockendorf, and
chair it Foundation Henri Pensis, Jean Hoss. The philharmonic concert of lOrchestre of Luxembourg was
under the cycle of, Robeco Zomerkonzerten ".

Philharmonique Luxembourg with the Fourth Sinfonie of Brahms in Wiesbaden
With
two, glowing romantic standard works from the golden age as the Orchestre
Philharmonique Luxembourg made itself recognized as an outstanding orchestra in
the Wiesbaden center with the castle yard plays Eltville:
with Tschaikowskys ' Violinkonzert D Dur from the year 1878 and the 1885
completed Sinfonie No. 4 e Moll OI 98 of Brahms.
Both
works were raised and I in no regard were disappointed nevertheless expectations
to the interpretation thereby surely. So
Tschaikowskys Violinkonzert extremely authentically, i.e. in the best sense
Russian. At the podium was Wassily
Sinaisky, the director of music of many years of the Muscow Philharmonic stood,
at the stage Vadim Gluzman. Into
the Ukraine born, only 26 years old Violinist, who has the outstanding Russian
teacher Zakhar Bron among its teachers, unfolded on its Stradivari a clay/tone
technical brilliant voluminous with naturally working virtuosity -
perfect intonation and magnifying glass clean, played it nevertheless at
the same time emphatically and full passion up.
His identification with the work was noticeable.
Particularly the solo cadence in the first movement, singing and inside
light in the Canzonetta, ambitiously rapidly the final.
Luxembourg,
which changed over some years ago as a broadcast orchestra of the private into
the national orchestra, created in 1933, was under Sinaisky’s
prudent line phrasing very flexibly.
The sound was altogether pleasantly darkly sounded, coloured
considerably shaped by the homogeneous tone
and was also very cleanly balanced. For
the cordial applause Gluzman thanked the audience with an encore.
Exemplary
orchestra discipline and strong team spirit
demonstrated the Luxembergers also with the fourth Sinfonie by Brahms.

It
was a marvelous concert of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Luxembourg this
Thursday evening the violinist Dmitri Sitkovetski vigorously played the Concerto
for Violin of Tsjaikowsky, although its intonation in the highest positions and
in the double cords is not always perfect, nor its impassioned play always so
subtle. Not being not an only violinist but also head of the
orchestra he turned on any subject
to the orchestra to indicate to the various groups of instruments their attacks
in their giving signs of head and convulsions of body.
The
next time It will make better leave that to Vassili Sinaiski, a head who could
direct his orchestra with an intelligence masterly through works.
Especially the Brahms 4th has a profusion of (Malls) and
colors of flax jewel, this orchestra, with its beautiful rich sonority and its
intense manner to make music moreover, it is distinguished in the whole world
force with its magnificent recordings documenting contemporary composers,
including the oevure for orchestra of lannis Xenakis.
Could it return with such a program, the Luxembourg orchestra?

The
castle yard Eltville presented now the appearance
of the Orchestre Philharmonique Luxembourg as one of the symphonic high points
of the meeting sequence of this year. The
orchestra, "representative of the Grand Duchy", whose principal
conductor will be starting from September 2002 Bramwell Tovey, was led by
Vassily Sinaisky, that boss of the Moscow Philharmonic orchestra. He led emotionally, determined less on formal discrimination
than mindful, glowing darkly its Brahms rendition in the Wiesbadener center who

& Biased Comments About The Artist
On
successive nights last January, in the concert hall of the Luxembourg
Conservatory, I heard two orchestras. The
first was the Berlin Staatskapelle under Daniel Barenboim and the second was the
Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra. Berlin
was predictably excellent, with waves of dark, beautiful string sound – a
tough act to follow! The
Luxembourgers held their own very capably.
It’s a different sound – brighter in the strings and with more
pointed attacks from the winds. But
it was a beautiful, beautifully tuned performance, and I expect a great response
on tour here.
In
a way, it would be a surprise if Luxembourg did not have an excellent orchestra.
The country is cosmopolitan mix of primarily French and German cultures
right in the heart of western Europe. Quite
a few international corporations have offices there, and the population enjoys
the highest per capita income in Europe.
The
government is strongly behind the orchestra as evidenced by the Duke and Duchess
of Luxembourg’s attendance at the January concert (they missed their chance to
meet me). It seemed that most of
official Luxembourg turned out. The
Ministry of Culture has made foreign touring by the orchestra a priority.
We have a nice tour in the works.
