Sigvards Klava, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor
Ensemble of 27
Regularly included in discussions of greatest choirs, the Latvian Radio Choir is the perfect realization of director Sigvard Klava’s concept of a “sound laboratory” in which he explores all that the human voice is capable of in a choral setting. This tour celebrates the Latvian Centenary, and will feature works by countrymen Vasks and Esenvalds, and also Mahler, Gabrieli, Messiaen, Stravinsky and others. The LRC has performed at Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival, for Toronto’s Soundstreams, has collaborated with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in Disney Hall, and sung in a mixed-media work at BAM.
“One could hardly ask for better performers in this repertoire than the Latvian Radio Choir under the inspired direction of Sigvards Kļava… A superb release.” Gramophone, August 2016
“Magical and mystical: the Latvian Radio Choir impresses in Dublin. Spiritual transcendence, ghostly wailing, harmonic deconstruction, microtonal singing – not your average concert experience, admittedly, but there again the Latvian Radio Choir (LRC) is far from being your average choral group.” Bachtrack.com, May 2015
“This concert was a revelation in terms of what can be done with 24 fine singers, refined sensitivity to vocal sound, an ethos of quality and the sanctity of the musical experience, all combined, no doubt, with sheer hard work from the choir and conductor Sigvards Klava.” The Sydney Morning Herald, January 2015
